Exceeding Expecations

Yesterday I lost 1% in stocks. Today I gained all that back and then some. So far, in a week and a half, I’ve made 3% profit, when my original goal was to break even over a span of 2 months.

For MMW, I got 2 A’s in both of my MMW papers so far, and an A+ on my midterm. I was aiming for an A- in MMW, but perhaps an A is in reach now!

For Japanese, I was expecting a B- on my first midterm, but was pleased to end up with a nice solid A on top of 2 A+ quiz scores. I was also aiming for an A- overall, but I guess an A is in reach also.

For Econ 3, I got another nice A+ on my first midterm.

For Econ 120A, the midterm is next week, and it’s open book. I think since I did so well in MMW and Japanese, I’ll be find with a B+/A- on this midterm since it’s upper division. Of course, an A is always nice!

So far, this quarter has had some great results, far beyond what I had expected. Hoping this carries on throughout the rest of the quarter..

Here I am reading up on Game of Thrones lore instead of studying for my Japanese midterm part 2 tomorrow. Now I am typing this post up. Later, I will probably spam Facebook.

My first part of my Japanese midterm, I don’t feel like I did too well. So at this point I’m expecting an A-, which I don’t mind and would be easy to get without trying. It’ll depend on if I can get an A- on this disaster of a midterm. If I can get an A-, then I can get an A overall in the class, if not it’ll be a lot harder to obtain an A overall.

My MMW papers so far have been great, 2 A’s on each assignment, and the midterms should be easy, I think I may be able to pull out an A this quarter.

Lower division Econ, I think I got a 97% on my first midterm, not sure though since it’s not exactly explicit in my grades. But if it is true, Econ 3 should be an A.

Upper division Econ, the tests are open book, which should make it really easy, and the concept are pretty easy. Hoping for an A.

So I’m looking potentially at 3.92 GPA, which would bring me close enough to round up to a 3.9, or my goal GPA for Stanford, if I decide to even do law school anymore.

Which is why I’m have a very slight hope for this hobby of stocks to take off and then I can forget about law school. Today, I came $20 closer to that dream, yay profits!

Who am I kidding, that’s not going to happen though.

Honestly they’re one of the few reasons that I still want to go lawyer, even though I wouldn’t be contributing to all the cool new Google stuff, it’d still be awesome to be a part of a legal department.

Macro Econ

I hate how this macroecon class is so ambiguous on answers.

I mean normally this wouldn’t be that hard, except I hate how macroecon has contradictory vocabulary, where one thing can mean something in one context, and then it means something else in another context.

Of course, that wouldn’t be that bad at all, except macroecon seems to be all about tying together different ideas, and then these differing meanings for vocabulary get intertwined and mixed up and you get a clusterfuck of an essay like some of the ones I’ve read for my English class.

It’s absolutely frustrating.

In one context, “interest” means interest, and in the next context, “interest” has inflation and you’re supposed to remove inflation, but when you remove inflation you have a completely new real “interest”. And since you have real “interest” then the old interest is nominal “interest”, but “interest” doesn’t actually mean what it’s supposed to cause then you have “rate of return” which is what interest is supposed to mean to the real world.

It’s mostly a hobby as of right now, and I’m just playing around using stocks. But yeah I have some money saved up (from New years, Birthday, current job) and I opened an account and am trading! I’m only planning to invest a few hundred at max though, not anything too serious.

I started this quarter off pretty poorly, a B+, a B (which turned to an A), and a B- on the first round of midterms, and a C (which turned to a C+) on a paper. At that point, I was looking at about a maybe 2.something GPA, and was devastated. Naturally, I began to make rethink my life choices, and decided to try CSE for a bit, but I decided I’d wait for the 2nd round of midterms before doing anything permanent.

On the 2nd round, I did better, with 2A+s, and 2A’s, but one C+ on a paper. Of course, my grades improved, but they were probably still unsatisfactory for my goal of law, but I decided to wait until the end of winter quarter before making any choices.

During Finals, I solidified my grades, and ended up with a GPA that actually improved on Fall’s GPA. My overall GPA creeped up towards that 3.9 mark that I made my goal.

Although my goal of law is still obtainable, this quarter has made me realize how much I actually love Economics and its opened the idea of me doing something economics related instead of trying for law school. Yay for ending winter quarter on a good note :)

Why I hate MMW

I was doing my course evaluations and I realized

For my other 3 classes, I literally spend an hour a week outside of class doing class work.

But MMW thinks it’s so high and mighty that it can assign 10+ hours of work a week…

College would be great without MMW.

I have no Idea what I’m doing with life. I told myself that if I get a nice GPA, I’d continue with law.

For the majors I’ve been looking at, I’m interested in CSE, not passionate, just interested. Law I’m passionate in, but MMW is really killing how interested I am in it. The length for law is also a problem, as well as the stress of holding a high GPA. I can also just take Econ and graduate with that, but I’m not passionate in it, but it’s relatively easy.

I feel like CSE is going to be harder, since I need to relearn everything, but it’ll be safer in the long run even if I’m not passionate about it. Econ will be easier, and I can graduate in 3 years, but it won’t be as safe since I’m not passionate enough to get a jump start on my career.

On the other hand, I’m a people’s person, and sitting behind a desk (CSE) isn’t something I can really see myself doing.

After midterm round 1, I got some pretty bad grades (compared to last quarter). However, after this recent round of midterms, I’m feeling a lot better about my grades, it’s just MMW holding me back. But if I manage an A- for MMW, I’ll still be at around a 3.91 GPA, which is my target, so maybe I can still do law.

As tiring as today was, it was pretty fucking good

Before Midterms start, I’m hoping for my cumulative grades to be:

Econ: A
Vis 21B: A
Japn 10B: A
MMW 12: A

But will be okay with MMW 12 being an A-

So worst case scenario, I’ll end with a 3.91 and a 3.88 cumulative

We’ll see how my expectations change after Midterms and papers round 1.

Fall Quarter 2012

I can’t complain about my grades. Didn’t get the 4.0 I was aiming for, but a 3.86 first quarter is pretty good. I do blame having to write a 3 essays on art for my Final a big reason why I didn’t get that 4.0, and a TA who grades way too harshly for MMW.

Next quarter I’ll have another art class, except it’s supposed to be all memorization, which sounds ridiculously easy, especially since there’s a 60% A range for that class. MMW 12 TAs are a hit or miss, hopefully my next quarter TA will be a hit, because this quarter I had the hardest grader. If everything goes well, then I’ll be able to bring my GPA up.

Other than that I’ll have Econ and Japanese 10b, which shouldn’t be too hard to get A’s in. So a 3.86 GPA isn’t bad, especially since it’s my first quarter. Stanford Law School average GPA for acceptance is 3.87, so I was just right below that. Being an Econ major probably gives me an excuse to be slightly under, but I’m still aiming to be over that 3.87 mark though. As for Berkeley Law School, I’m over the average so I’m on track for them.

Hopefully next quarter I won’t have to work the closing shift for work. Most of my classes are early morning so I should be able to get out of closing shifts. They weren’t bad, but they ate up a large portion of my night 2 times a week. I was also under performing the next day due to lack of sleep, and it showed on my 2nd Japanese midterm. Without closing shifts, I’ll be able to do better in my classes probably.

Socially wise this quarter was a good experience. I didn’t bother making masses of meaningless friendships, but I did have a good amount of friends. I don’t know about most people, but playing StarCraft 2 late into the night with my suite sounds like fun to me.

Next quarter I plan to join a couple of clubs, so that should probably further my social life. I’m aiming for 2, Circle K, and Model UN if I make it. I also have VSA with some established friends already in it.

Health wise I lost weight, and that’s all I care. All I really wanted to do was not get hit with the freshman 15, but getting skinnier is a plus. Lost about 8 pounds in total after Fall Quarter, yay.

Next quarter my friend Roy and I are going to start up a workout schedule under my friend Dan. If I stick to it, and I probably will since I’ve got people to go to the gym with, maybe I’ll lost even more weight and get toned.

Long distance relationship wise, there were some slightly rocky points, but obviously nothing too serious. Right now, it’s going really great, and she’s coming back to SD with me for a week and a half, and I can’t wait for that. nothing but blue skies ahead for my relationship with Mi.

In the end, Fall Quarter was amazing, but Winter Quarter looks even better. College is amazing!

For an A in Japanese: A- on finals, likelihood: Very likely with minimal studying

For an A in visual arts: A on finals, likelihood: Toss-up, take home test that I need to work really hard on

For an A in MMW: B on finals, likelihood: Very likely with some review before hand

I think the people upstairs have this problem with NOT BEING ABLE TO walk like a normal person. All they do is stomp around. It’s incredibly annoying, if you can hear your footstep, then I can hear it 100x louder. Is that too hard to comprehend? I figured that out on the 2nd day when I realized I might be walking too loud for the people downstairs. People are so inconsiderate some times. Like are you people wrestling each other or something upstairs ugghh

I need to stop looking at law schools because my life sucks.

Also, the people upstairs need to stop dribbling their basketballs at 1AM IN THEIR ROOM. I cannot emphasize enough how annoying and inconsiderate this is. It’s also annoying because this dribbling and stomping problem happens ONLY in the room above mine.

The people upstairs also skateboard in their common room. Is it too hard to understand that you’re inside and you should behave like a normal, intelligent human being?

SO much stress over my grades and future goals all because of law school. Why must I put all this pressure on myself ugh. Oh well, hopefully I can pull out a 3.925 GPA which would put me above Stanford’s admissions GPA average but I think I’d be fine with a 3.85 which would batter my hopes and dreams but not be crushed. A 3.775 is a guaranteed but that’d put me slightly below my backup of Berkeley so hopefully I don’t go there.
